Billy Maines, Tribal Environmental Coordinator, gets very busy with several recycling projects during the summer. Vans were barged out of Dillingham with electronics and fishing web again this summer and though we wanted to operate the "Junk Car" project this year the land fill did not have the capacity to take any more vehicles until the ones already there are dealt with. We have now won a Special Projects grant through the Environmental Protection Agency that will allow us to purchase the necessary equipment to easier conduct the "Junk Car" project in the future. We are also in communication with the City of Dillingham staff and planner to work toward accomplishing the goals set forth in the refuse plan.
We continue to educate ourselves on the mine development district in the Iliamna Lake area; we have established a committee of Nushagak River and Bay communities to meet and discuss threats and opportunities of mine development in the Bristol Bay region.
We are now the coordinator for the Region X Regional Tribal Operations Committee (RTOC) over the next "two years. This group discusses regional issues and brings them to the federal National Tribal Operations Committee (NTOC) which then advocates for all regions with the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
We were awarded a contract with the Department of Defense to put a plan together for cleaning up one or two sites used by the Department of Defense in the 1940s and 1950s.
