Renee Roque, was recently promoted as our Tribal Environmental Coordinator and Dan Decker was hired as the Environmental Assistant.
Renee has been living in Dillingham since 2001 and is raising her family in Dillingham. She has a strong interest in sustaining our lands for future generations and bettering our community through keeping our land, air and water clean and pristine. Dan Decker has lived throughout the Bristol Bay area and had extensive knowledge in our culture and ‘way of life’. He recently moved back to Dillingham, where he is raising his family. Dan’s vast knowledge in grant writing and administration, will benefit our tribal members and EPA program.
Our EPA program currently is continuing with E-Waste and fish web recycling. In the future we would like to start recycling light bulbs that are currently being brought to the landfill. We will be working closely with the City of Dillingham to develop an Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP).
We continue to educate ourselves on the mine development district in the Iliamna Lake area; we have established a committee of Nushagak River and Bay communities to meet and discuss threats and opportunities of mine development in the Bristol Bay region.
We were awarded a contract with the Department of Defense to put a plan together for cleaning up one or two sites used by the Department of Defense in the 1940s and 1950s.
